Factors to Consider in Risk Management

In the third webinar we will look at factors that can help us in managing risk.

Who is it for?

Beginners - Those who at least have basic understanding of charting and who are willing to learn more from examples, further reading & studies.

Intermediate - Those who wish to take their trading and chart analysis skills to higher level.

Advanced - Those who wish to have their analysis challenged, confirmed or have alternative prospective trade setups highlighted that they might not have noticed or do not have the resources or time to monitor and cover a wider range of markets.

Objectives of the Options Trading Group

Many readily available courses ("short or intensive") today, teach theory but leave students to manage the practical aspects of market analysis and trading for themselves.

In contrast this Options Trading Group will endeavour to offer a combination of education and mentorship delivered live and continuously, in the area of :

A

  • Use of Options in trading and selection of appropriate Options Series for a particular trade set-up.
  • Multi-disciplinary approach to Chart Analysis for identifying potential trade candidates incorporating intermarket (or cross-market) analysis for confirming the broader agreement of other correlated instruments and their larger trends in play or reversals.
  • Initially, emphasis will selectively consider major swings in the market that could last several months or longer in order to limit the screen time needed to monitor the watch list and manage trades. Once members gain experience and confidence, individuals could consider trades that lasts for several days and weeks rather than months if they so wish.
  • This approach could allow traders to continue with their normal commitments without the need to spend a lot of time in front of their PC, monitoring the live market. The net result will be fewer trades but very profitable ones that could offer potential to grow capital or generate income over time.

Therefore, the emphasis will be on being selective, rather than entering lots of trades. Only considering trades in major long term swings in the following markets:

  • Equities, World Market Indices.
  • Commodities (both Industrial and Agricultural).
  • Energy.
  • Precious Metals.
  • Currencies.

A very selective process will be employed in short listing potential trades by taking in to account the following:

  1. The condition and volatility of the market.
  2. Types of instruments and likely liquidity, as well as the cost of the trade and where possible the availability of suitable ETF (Equity Traded Funds) with Options.
  3. Potential size of the move and expected duration.

Main approach of analysis will be based on multi-disciplinary Technical Analysis that includes:

  • Traditional - such multiple time frames, trend lines/channels, support & resistance, pitchfork, momentum indicators etc.
  • Pattern recognition.
  • Elliott Wave.
  • Seasonal.
  • Intermarket Analysis.

Trading instruments

A major part of trading will be based on Instruments which have available ETF's that are very liquid rather than exotics (which have very limited market caps and may not be very liquid). In other words, ETFs will be surrogates for the Futures and Indices Market. Individual Stock Options listed in US major Exchanges will also be traded.

In these Markets we would consider the following types of trades:

  1. Using Options - Naked or Spreads depending on what is appropriate for a particular trade in order to limit capital at risk as well as reduce initial capital required.
  2. Those that offer limited risk-to-capital and potential returns that could be in the order of several multiples.
  3. in some instances, covered options could be considered, to reduce risk, enhance returns or provide income.
